The Promise of Beauty to Come

Adventures & Stories
The Promise of Beauty to Come

Flower buds fascinate me. I am in awe of the whole growth process and how such a rather mundane little thing can transform into a beautiful flower. A flower bud is the promise of a beautiful tomorrow.

I am going to assume that all of us, at one time or another, have had a bad day. Maybe you’ve even had a bad week, month, or year. In those times we could all use something to give us hope that good things are coming. For me, this bud symbolizes that hope.

Where I grew up and where I now live, this blanketflower is a pretty common sight along roadsides. I’ve planted it in my flowerbeds and as of today, this October day, I still have blooms. It is a hearty plant and can tolerate the extremes of Texas weather; persevering and sometimes even flourishing despite the stress put on it.

Beautiful Name

Adventures & Stories
Strut Your Stuff

The Orange-crowned warbler ranges in color from drab olive to pale yellow and is argubly one of the plainest of warblers. The orange feathers, from which it gets its name, are rarely seen. Is that why this one put on a show for the camera? Dancing in the water, compensating for its perceived lack of beauty in an attempt to make the most of what it has in order to stand out and be seen? Go on and strut your stuff little bird!

How and why did someone select this beautiful name for this little warbler? Perhaps, bestowing a name, fit for royalty was a way to compensate for being, what many consider, an otherwise plain looking bird.

The name orange-crowned warbler, conjures images in my mind of a bird with a fiery, orange ring of feathers around its head. If told to look for a bird with this name, I would never look for a bird like the one shown above. Would you?

Beauty in Everyday Scenes

Composition & Creativity

I made this photo while in Galveston, Texas attending my very first Featherfest. Pictured is a Great Egret in flight. I spotted the bird in a pond while driving along Stewart Road and I pulled off to see what kind of photo opportunities might present themselves. This is the shot that I feel is the best from that stop. In many ways, it was a lucky shot, as I was practicing panning to capture birds in flight. I like the movement conveyed and the way the sunlight is backlighting the bird.

A flying egret is not an uncommon sight along the coast, especially in the spring. Being a common sight is precisely why they are often overlooked and dismissed. We sometimes become so used to having a thing around that we stop truly seeing it and maybe even stop looking. This work reminds me to stop and look for the beauty in everyday scenes around me.

Finding Beauty in the Here and Now

Composition & Creativity

One of my frustrations with photography blogs and magazines, is their tendency to feature gorgeous images from exotic places I’m not likely to ever visit. Ever. They seem to imply I cannot possibly capture awe-inspiring landscapes or produce captivating street photography unless I travel far, far from home where I slog through muddy jungles or eat insects on a stick from a street vendor.

I have done a fair bit of traveling and plan to do more. But, when I look at those articles with stunning photography, none of my experiences seem to measure up and I wonder why I bother to shoot photos at all. Then I look through my portfolio and remember. I love capturing a moment from my world, my reality, my vision.

Challenge accepted! For the rest of 2019, I will be sharing some of my works and writing about the beauty found right here; in my home state, my home town, and my own home — proving that one can find beauty in the here and now.
