Snap, Shoot, & Go! Waka Rapid Camera Neck Strap Review for Security & Comfort

As a photographer, having a reliable and comfortable camera strap is essential, especially when spending long hours in the field. I have been, and continue to be, a Peak Design fan. I own 2 styles of the Peak neck straps and a couple of bags as well. I have also use the Black Rapid sling designed for women. It was not designed for this woman. I found it uncomfortable. It was too thin and the curves didn't match mine. The Peak neck straps work well with lighter gear for short periods of time. I do like the quick adjust for length to allow for the camera to go over my shoulder rather than around my neck. But, I do find I tend to hold my camera with one hand the entire time I'm out walking around but not shooting, to keep the weight of the camera off of my neck. This fact really began to bother me. So, off to find a new strap.

Finding the perfect camera strap is a common struggle for photographers, as comfort, security, and accessibility all play a crucial role in the shooting experience. Traditional neck straps often come included with cameras, but they can cause neck strain during long shoots. Sling straps, like the Black Rapid and waka Camera Strap, offer a more ergonomic cross-body design, allowing for quick access and better weight distribution, though they may require extra hardware. Hand straps provide a secure grip for handheld shooting but lack versatility for longer sessions. Harness systems are great for carrying multiple cameras but can feel bulky. Ultimately, the best strap depends on your own shooting style, gear weight, and comfort preferences. I hope this review might help you in your hunt for the perfect camera strap.

Today, I’m reviewing the waka Camera Neck Strap with Quick Release and Safety Tether, Adjustable Camera Shoulder Sling Strap to see if it lives up to its promises. This strap caught my attention because of its ergonomic design, quick-release feature, and added safety tether, which are all features I think are crucial for photographers who need both security and flexibility while shooting. Whether you're trekking around in nature, capturing wildlife, or navigating busy streets, a good camera strap can make all the difference. In this review, I’ll share my experience using the waka strap, highlighting its strengths, potential drawbacks, and whether it’s a worthwhile investment for fellow photographers.

Introduction

A good camera strap is more than just an accessory—it’s an essential tool that impacts comfort, security, and ease of use while shooting. But I still want one that looks good! The waka Camera Neck Strap with Quick Release and Safety Tether is designed to offer a balance of security and convenience, making it a compelling choice for those of us who need quick access to their camera without sacrificing stability. It comes in an all black version or the one I got, a colorful version that has a southwest vibe. I tested this strap in the field to see how it performs in real-world scenarios.

First Impressions & Unboxing

Upon opening the package, I immediately liked the solid feel and build quality of the strap. The materials feel durable yet lightweight, with a combination of soft padded neoprene for comfort and reinforced nylon webbing for strength. The metal mounting plate had mixed reviews online. But, it appears some design modification have been made to address concerns in those reviews.

Additionally, the safety tether provides extra peace of mind, ensuring the camera stays secure even if the primary connection fails. The package includes the strap itself with the soft pad, a metal mounting plate, and an adjustable tether, all of which feel well-constructed. The neoprene pad contains a zipper pouch that is perfect for and extra battery and SD card.

Key Features & Specifications - from the manufacturer

  • Material: Soft, padded neoprene for comfort; durable nylon web strap for strength
  • Quick Release Mechanism: Allows for fast removal without taking off the entire strap
  • Adjustability: Easily lengthened or shortened for a custom fit
  • Safety Tether: Provides an extra layer of security in case of accidental detachment
  • Weight Distribution: Designed to reduce neck strain and improve comfort during long shooting sessions
  • Mounting System: Attaches via a metal plate that screws into the camera’s tripod socket

Performance & Real-World Use

During field testing, I used the waka strap on a mirrorless camera and a heavier lens to see how it performed. This is my wildlife setup and one where I would be in the field for longer periods and hiking over various terrains. For this setup, I attached the mounting plate to the tripod collar rather than the bottom of the camera to reduce weight on the camera/lens connection. The padded shoulder strap distributed weight well, making it pretty comfortable for extended use. The cross-body sling design gave quick access to the camera, which is particularly useful when shooting fast-moving subjects like wildlife or street scenes. It also allowed me to have both hands free while walking through brush.

The quick-release feature is a nice feature when transitioning between handheld and tripod shooting. It detaches by unscrewing the metal plate from the camera's tripod mount. Then I had to attach the tripod plate to the camera in order to mount it on the tripod itself. I found a workaround for this by using a different quick release metal plate that doubles as quick shoe tripod plate. Whereas the included waka plate is one piece with a hole for clipping the camera to it, the QR-60 quick release place crews into the tripod mount on the camera, has a place to clip the camera strap and serves as an Arca plate for my tripod. The QR-60 is also flat, which is easier for getting the camera in and out of my bag without having to remove it. Links to this on Amazon are at the end of the post.

The safety tether adds an extra layer of security, and though I never had the main strap fail, it’s reassuring to know that there's a backup in place. One thing I did not like, was the tether strap could not easily be removed from the metal plate. To remedy that, I used a few items from Peak design that I had on hand. There is also an Amazon link at the end of the post for these.

One minor issue, according to reviews, is that the metal mounting plate can sometimes loosen over time, especially with frequent movement. I did not experience this issue. This is a common problem reported with many sling-style straps, and it’s something to be aware of. Occasionally checking and tightening the mount should solve the problem. The included mounting plate is tightened with a rather large, plastic knob--while easy to grasp, I can see how it might loosen if not centered on the plate.

Comparison to Other Camera Straps

Compared to standard neck straps, the waka strap offers added comfort and flexibility. Traditional straps often caused me neck strain, whereas this cross-body design distributed weight more evenly. When compared to higher-end sling straps like the BlackRapid Sport, the waka strap provides many of the same features at a more budget-friendly price.

Pros & Cons

✅ Pros:
✔ Comfortable padded neoprene strap with storage pocket
✔ Quick-release mechanism for easy removal
✔ Secure cross-body sling design for hands-free walking & reduced neck strain
✔ Safety tether adds extra security
✔ Affordable** compared to premium sling straps

❌ Cons:
✖ Metal mounting plate may loosen over time
✖ The neck strap may be too wide for smaller individuals
✖ Some might prefer a more premium brand but I couldn't tell a difference between this and the Black Rapid strap

Final Verdict

The waka Camera Neck Strap with Quick Release and Safety Tether is an excellent choice for photographers looking for a comfortable and functional camera strap without breaking the bank. Its quick-release feature, padded design, and added safety tether make it a great alternative to more expensive sling straps. While the included mounting plate requires occasional tightening, this minor inconvenience is outweighed by the overall performance and convenience.

Who should buy this strap?
✔ Travel photographers who need ready access to their camera but also need to have two free hands at times
✔ Wildlife and street photographers who shoot on the go - more candid shots when you don't approach people with a camera in hand
✔ Anyone looking for a comfortable alternative to traditional neck straps - mileage may vary, especially for larger women. ;)

For photographers seeking a reliable, comfortable, and budget-friendly camera strap, my verdict is that the waka strap is a solid option.
