Meet the Artist
About Carol

I grew up on Galveston Island, where beaches, bayous, and open pastures were part of everyday life. Long before I picked up a camera, I was learning to notice the natural world—the changing light, the small details, and the character of places that might otherwise go overlooked.
That early curiosity continues to shape my work as a fine art photographer and digital artist.
After a career supporting technology in higher education at The Victoria College, then with Texas A&M University, I turned to photography full time. What began as a personal creative pursuit became an encore career that has taken my work into juried exhibitions across Texas and beyond. It has also opened opportunities to share my knowledge through presentations for Carnival Cruise Lines, the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, and the Texas Master Naturalist Annual Conference.
I live and work in College Station, Texas, although my photographic interests take me well beyond the state. I am also the founder of Sommer Haus Gallery, a virtual exhibition space for artists.
Whether I'm photographing a familiar Texas landscape or exploring somewhere entirely new, the motivation is much the same: curiosity about what is there, what makes it distinctive, and what might be revealed by looking a little longer.
Artist Statement
My work begins with observation, but it doesn't always end with documentation.
I'm interested in the relationship between what we see and what we experience—the ways light, color, texture, and atmosphere can transform an ordinary encounter into something memorable.
Photography gives me a way to explore those relationships. Sometimes the photograph itself is the finished artwork. Other times, it becomes the foundation for a more interpretive piece, developed through digital techniques that may include layering, brushwork, texture, and expressive adjustments to color and light.
The process is intentional. Every creative decision contributes to the character of the finished work, whether the result remains faithful to the original scene or moves beyond it.
What connects these approaches is my desire to create artwork that invites more than a passing glance. I want viewers to discover something that resonates with their own experiences, memories, or sense of place.
What I Do
Fine Art Photography
My fine art photography grows from time spent observing the natural world and the places I explore.
I'm drawn to landscapes, wildlife, botanical subjects, waterways, and the visual character of rural places. Light and atmosphere frequently determine how I approach a subject, and patience often reveals details that aren't immediately apparent.
These photographs reflect my interpretation of a real moment or place, shaped through composition, timing, and careful finishing.
Photo-based Fine Art
Some photographs suggest possibilities that extend beyond a conventional photographic presentation.
In these works, my original photography becomes the foundation for further artistic interpretation. Through digital layering, textures, brushwork, and other creative techniques, I develop pieces that combine photographic detail with additional expressive elements.
The degree of transformation varies. Some works retain a strong photographic appearance; others become more abstract or visually textured. The goal isn't necessarily to make a photograph resemble a painting, but to explore what the image can become through deliberate artistic choices.
Both approaches are part of the same creative practice. Each begins with something I have observed and photographed, and each reflects the way I interpret what I've seen.
Sharing the Art of Seeing
Photography has also given me opportunities to help others develop their own ways of seeing.
Through workshops, presentations, books, and creative guides, I share ideas about observation, photographic technique, and the creative decisions that shape an image.
I believe photography offers something beyond the finished photograph. It encourages curiosity, patience, attention, and a deeper connection with the world around us.
These ideas are central to my educational work, including 30 Days of Light and Finding the Light Again, which explore photography as a practice of noticing, reflection, and creative discovery.
Whether someone is beginning to explore photography or has been photographing for decades, there is always something new to see.
Explore My Work
My portfolio brings together photographs and photography-based digital artwork from Texas and beyond. Each collection reflects a different aspect of my interests, from wildlife and landscapes to botanical studies, waterways, and more interpretive compositions.
I invite you to explore the work, discover the stories behind the images, and find the pieces that speak to you.
