In the low, cool light of a shadowed woodland, a scrub jay clings to a weathered stump, head bowed as it peers intently downward. Its blue plumage glows softly against the dark, the only true color in a world of silvered wood and deep shadow.
The mood is hushed and watchful, as if the scene were lit by the moon rather than the sun. The split and weathered grain of the wood, the bird's alert posture, and the darkness gathered around it create a sense of quiet mystery, a private moment discovered at the edge of night.
